Janis is considered by many to be the pioneer of stand-up comedy movement in Latvia. Six years ago, he founded the Royal Improvisation Theatre, of which he is still in charge. Janis has staged 4 solo performances during the last four years and he has been also a co-author of screenplay for the show 3 žurkas (3 rats).

In his speech, Jānis shares his own experience in the industry and talks about the reasons why the culture of Latvian humor has turned itself to some sort of a standby mode, what could the Latvian society gain by developing its humor and is comedy really a ‘light’ genre.
